"When I was young, I used to admire
intelligent people; as I grow older, I admire kind people."
-- Abraham Joshua Heschel --
"Constant kindness can accomplish much. As
the sun makes ice melt, kindness causes misunderstanding, mistrust, and
hostility to evaporate." -- Albert Schweitzer --

SAVE
YOUR IQ
There was a study done which showed when a person is
being yelled at their IQ drops 7 points. This is amazing to me. Think
about it. When you are yelling at your kids to pick up their room, or your
spouse for coming home late, or your employees for the quality of the
work, you are setting it up for their IQ to drop SEVEN points, thus
leaving them less able to learn in that moment.
Have you ever yelled at yourself when you did
something you wished you hadn't. Perhaps you dropped something on the
floor and it broke, or you made a dent in your car door, or you didn't
finish a project when you had agreed you would. Too many of us beat
ourselves up when things don't go as we had planned.
When we yell at, berate, criticize, or judge
ourselves, we are doing the same thing, lowering our IQ and making
ourselves less capable to take advantage of the learning available.
Mistakes are inevitable, learning is optional. To me
learning is a cornerstone to success in life. We take action, we produce a
result. When we take a moment to observe the result we produce, we can
teach ourselves how to do better next time.
I have a friend who to me is outstanding in how she
talks to herself. She calls herself sweetheart and is gentle and kind when
something goes awry. She is care-full with herself and takes the time to
point out what happened so she can see where she can take a more effective
action next time. To me it is soothing to be around someone who is being
kind to themself. Not only is the energy of her self-talk soothing, but it
is also inspiring as I too want to be kind to myself in that way.
I encourage you to check it out. Find out for
yourself what occurs when you speak kind words. See if you can discover
that kindness is actually a more powerful state than self-judgment.
Kindness fosters your intelligence and your ability to learn from life.
Learning promotes wisdom and an even greater capacity to deal with life on
Life's terms.
