PROBLEMS
ARE GOOD FOR YOU
I have a 54 mile one way drive to get to my downtown
office. At the end of my drive I land in a cozy home, nestled in rolling
hills, overlooking an ancient farmhouse, with a pasture full of
wildflowers in the spring and summer.
So, you can see the drive is worth it. Coming home
is a good thing.
I keep myself engaged while driving by listening to
lectures and books. Great fun, don't even know where the time goes lots of
time.
Recently I was listening to Pat Allen talking about
our brain neurology. She shared a story about her mother-in-law who had
begun to lose her eyesight. The less she was able to see the more her
mental function diminished. She no longer could do the daily crossword
puzzle or read.
Pat's solution was to get her a dog and a never
ending supply of audio books. Apparently in a short while the woman began
to consistently get her mental faculties back.
Apparently, dendrites, which are the very, very end
of our neurons, along which impulses are received from other brain cells.
These dendrites will wither if not used in three days.
It's the ol' "use it or lose it"
phenomena.
The good news is that a dendrite will also grow in
three days. That's what happened to Pat's mother-in-law. She began to
stimulate her brain again by having to solve problems. Pat had given her a
problem. A dog to care for.
The dog plus the audio books and the woman
apparently began to grow dendrites like crazy.
After listening to this story I was confronted by a
'problem'. I noticed my initial response was to feel frustrated, as I was
stopped in my moving forward. "Oye, a problem to solve - and I was
planning on doing something else." That sorta thing.
But what happened next was interesting. I shifted to
seeing the problem as an opportunity to grow more dendrites!
And then I started to laugh. Maybe I might grow
enough dendrites to remember where I put my keys, or why I came into this
room, or to turn the stove off, or . . .
