HINDSIGHT
IS 20/20
Have you ever considered that hindsight is 20/20? It
is easy to see choices that were available when we reflect on the past.
But when we are in the midst of experience we have limited awareness.
We can use hindsight 20/20 vision in two ways. We
can beat ourselves up with I should have, could have, wish I would have.
Whoopee, what fun. A great way to make a challenging situation worse.
OR - we can use hindsight reflection to learn and
grow. Once you see the opportunity that was there, you can do a Mental Do
Over. Mentally rehearse the correction. Envision yourself engaged in the
same experience showing up in the new way and producing your preferred
result.
This Mental Do Over will actually prepare you to do
better next time.
Years ago there was a study done that looked at the
impact of mental imaging one's physical results. A high school basketball
team was divided into three groups. After determining a base line, Group A
practiced foul shots for one hour each day. Group B mentally rehearsed a
perfectly executed foul shot, getting a basket every time, for one hour a
day. Group C did whatever they wanted, as long as it had nothing to do
with foul shots.
Which group do you think improved the most?
Drum Roll Please ...
The results indicated that Group B made the most
dramatic improvement. Mentally rehearsing actually engages the body.
Right now imagine biting into a lemon, notice what
happens to your mouth, your body, your thoughts. My mouth actually
puckered.
Now, imagine yourself standing at the very, very
edge of the Grand Canyon . . . and look down. Whoa, scary, eh?
That's the power of the creative imagination.
So once you have seen the possibilities revealed due
to 20/20 hindsight, you have a choice. You can use it to keep yourself
stuck by beating yourself up or you can use it as an opportunity to
practice new skills.
Which do you imagine will make your day?
QUOTES
"Nothing stands outside your loving. You
love your mistakes along with your successes. You love the down times as
much as the up times. In other words, you love yourself through every
thing, and your effort goes into loving."
~ John-Roger ~
"You can live in a world where there are no
mistakes, there is just the next opportunity to learn
something."
~ Katie Hendricks ~
