WIND
BENEATH OUR WINGS
I recently saw what I experienced as a heart lifting
movie. The name of the movie is "Once."
It tells a story about a woman who approaches a
street musician with sincere appreciation for his music and his talent.
The movie evolves with the two of them getting to
know each other partly by playing music together.
The part that touched me was the woman's willingness
to take action on her belief in the man's talent. With her encouragement
and support he cut a demo CD in order to move on his dream of playing
music professionally.
I wanted to call this woman his champion, but when I
looked up the word it means "someone who fights for a cause on behalf
of somebody else." But this woman didn't fight his battles, she more
infused his vision with the energy of her belief in his abilities.
She contributed energy. She offered unwavering
surety that he was talented. She demonstrated her belief that his music
was something others would want to hear. Her contribution moved him to
take action in service to his dreams.
She was bold, unconventional and unafraid of saying
the gift she saw in him. She was willing to celebrate and support that
gift.
Wondering what to call this energy of support, I
remembered a song from the movie "Beaches" where Bette Midler
sings about a friend being the "wind beneath her wings."
"That's it," I thought, this woman was the wind beneath his
wings. The wind assisting him in moving towards his desired destination.
Have you ever been part of someone else's flight?
Perhaps you were the wind beneath their wings, reminding them they can do
it. Telling them they are terrific. Keep moving those wings, you're almost
there.
Perhaps you've been supported in flight. It's a
glorious way we can support each other. Go for it! You can do it!
And if no one is around to whisper encouragement,
you can find a way to lift yourself.
What might that look like? Yea You. Way to go. Wow,
that's great. I know you can handle this. I trust you'll figure it out. I
really appreciate how you made that happen. You amaze me.
