"Enough is abundance to the wise."
~ Unknown ~
GOT APPLES?
I am planning a trip with a friend to an all
organic apple orchard
in Wisconsin. They have an abundant variety
of apples, some heirloom varieties. Last time I went each basket of apples had a description of
the apple and when it first came to America.
There was one apple from Italy that came here in the
1600s.
Another fun thing about the visit to the orchard is
that on the property there is an apple winery.
They produce orchard wines in small batches
using fresh, locally grown fruit and minimal cellar
treatment. They also make cider, draft
cider and more.
I chose not to go this weekend. The weather has
been too beautiful around here to sit in a car
for a three hour round trip. Instead I chose to
nurture my resources of time, energy and gas.
So I wandered around my property doing whatever as an excuse
to be outdoors.
Suddenly I smelled apple and I heard crunching. my
friend is munching away at an apple he just
picked off my ancient apple tree. "Is it
good?" I asked. "YumMmmMunch," was the reply.
Smelled and sounded good to me so I picked one
myself. I don't always have apples that are
edible in the fall. Last year a late frost took
the new blossoms and there were very few apples in the
fall. Since I don't spray the bugs often get to the apples before
I do. And then there are the deer.
This year I have a tree full. They are mostly
whole, juicy and bug free. The taste is sweet
and tart. I've begun to pick the tree and
intend to store as many as I can in the basement and in
the freezer so I can continue to eat out of my garden into the
winter.
At $2.99/pound of organic apples I am delighted to
discover the abundance in my backyard. I am now
wondering what else is right here in front of my
eyes that I have not seen up until now?
Most of us have been impacted by the changes in our
economy. Almost all of us drive. This year our
auto fuel bill has doubled. It's very easy to
fall into fear of lack and conversations about scarcity.
And we get what we focus upon.
Yet when that which is familiar is shaken up we have
an opportunity to reframe the challenges as
opportunities to be creative and inventive.
My guess is I wouldn't have been this excited about
my apples if a trip to Wisconsin cost a few
dollars round trip in gas as it once did. Now
I'm thinking applesauce, apples for pie, apples to bake, apples
to munch, apples to give away. What fun. What abundance.
What about you? What can you turn into riches? With
what have you already been blessed?
I was listening to the radio yesterday and there was
a piece on Warren Buffet, one of the wealthiest
men in the world. The broadcaster was listing 10
things Mr. Buffet suggests to pay attention to
regarding your financial health. At the end he quoted
Warren Buffet as saying it matters little if you leave behind
a giant building with your name on it. What matters is how
many people love you.
How much love is in your life? How much giving and
receiving of love is in your life? To me that is where your true wealth
is.
That and apples.
