CAN
YOU SEE THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM
I think it's great outside. I'm loving discovering
where I planted bulbs and which ones haven't been eaten by the squirrels.
On the other hand, I imagine Kelsi may not agree, as spring has triggered
a new bout of itching. Go
to my blog— and see photos of Kelsi with her booties on. My
invention to keep her from licking her paws raw.
Same experience—different response. I'm a happy
girl. Kelsi is an itchy one.
Which reminds me of a story I love. It tells of a
group of blind men who were asked to describe an elephant by touching it.
The first one reaches out and grabs the elephant's
tail and says, "This creature is long, thin and rope-like with hair
at one end."
The second reaches out and touches and explores the
ear. "You're incorrect. This elephant is a wide, flat, flabby thing,
akin to a fan. Not a rope at all."
The third, with arms wrapped around the elephant's
leg declares, "You're both wrong. This elephant is a great solid
tree-like creature."
"You're all nuts," said the forth.
"An elephant is an elegant, bone-like creature, smooth and
sharp," as his hands explore the tusks.
"Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong!" says the
fifth. "An elephant is a flexible, tapering animal like a snake. It
can spray water and grasp peanuts," as his hands play with the trunk.
In fact, each man is correct. From their individual
points of view the elephant is indeed like a rope, a fan, a tree trunk, a
bone and a snake.
Yet each is incorrect in that they believe their
frame of reference is the whole truth. Their point of view is valid, but
due to their blindness they're not able to have a comprehensive viewing
point.
Remember the elephant and the blind men next time
you are convinced your point of view is the "Truth." Almost
always there is another way of seeing the situation.
Challenge yourself to wonder is there more to this
animal than your limited senses can perceive. We all have blindness, even
if we can see.
