WHAT
KIND OF FACTORY ARE YOU?
Have you ever noticed when you press on the skin on
your forearm with your thumb that when you remove your thumb for a brief
moment there appears a whitish dot where your thumb had been?
If you haven't ever noticed, try it now. Better yet,
ask someone if you can try it on them. Gently press on the skin of their
forearm and notice what happens.
Now who did that? Who made the dot?
All in favor of the person pressing the skin raise
your hand.
When I do this experiment with clients in my office,
19 times out of 20 the answer is that I am the one causing the shift in
the color of the pigmentation of the skin as I am the Press-or.
Now do this. Take that very same finger you used on
the person kind enough to participate in this experiment and press it to a
piece of furniture.
What happens?
Well where I am, nothing happens. There is no
momentary shift in color. Nada.
We're going to vote again.
By a show of hands, who made the dot on your
friend's arm?
At this point the remaining 19 folks in my office
have decided that, the Press-ee made the dot appear on their arm - that
their body responded to the pressure of my thumb by making a momentary
white dot.
For sure my thumb was a perturbing agent for the
Press-ee. Yet the desk top I pushed against didn't seem perturbed at all.
I share this with you as a way to demonstrate how
many of us engage with life. Life happens (thumb pressure) and then we do
something with life happening. Then most of the time we think Life did it
to us.
Each one of us has a unique way of generating a
white dot in the face of life happening. Some of us generate resentment.
Others manufacture self-pity. Some of us get all indignant and
argumentative. Others get offended.
What kind of factory are you? What is your white
dot? What is automatically triggered from inside of you when Life presses
you?
And . . .
. . . is that what you want to be manufacturing?
What do you really want?
What changes do you need to put into place in order
to generate, for example, instead of resentment, gratitude? instead of
self-pity, appreciation? instead of indignation, joy?
Imagine looking back one year from now saying,
"Wow, look at all the joy I generated this year, look at the
gratitude and appreciation I manufactured."
