LIFE IS THE MUSIC WE DANCE TO

Life is the music we dance to. We don't get to change the music, but we can dance with the music that is playing.

Taking dance classes helps us gain competence in learning how to move with the music. The more skillful we are as a dancer the more creativity, opportunities and innovation are available to us as we move across the dance floor of life.

If we haven't learned dance skills there is a limited range of motion available. You've seen people on the dance floor who really don't know any of the dances. They rock back and forth perhaps to the beat of the music, perhaps not, but though they may be enjoying themselves, they are limited in their expression.

Dance classes are akin to gaining life skills. Once we know how to dance, have mastered basic life skills, we have a foundation to support our creativity with the music of life.

If we choose not to learn how to dance, life becomes limited. That's okay. It's the consequence of the choice not to learn to dance. Nothing wrong with that.

Learning is a choice. If you want to dance at your friend's wedding, take a class. If not, enjoy your choice not to learn and make the most with what you have when the band begins to play.

QUOTES

"Shall we dance?"
~King Mongkut of Siam, from 'The King and I'~

PRACTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Do you find yourself fumbling, tripping, running into things Life puts in your way?
  • Can you hear the music of the dance of the moment?
  • Notice what trips you up consistently and ask yourself is there an opportunity for learning?
  • If so, decide how much energy, time, and/or resources do you use not knowing how to dance this particular dance?
  • Evaluate whether it is worth it to learn something new.
  • If so, find a book, teacher, class, workshop and learn to become competent in the area that has been tripping you up.

WONDER QUESTIONS:

  • Do you want to dance with Life?
  • Are you willing to learn and grow and become Life's dances partner?
