REWEAVING
THE FABRIC
This past month my father died. For those of you who
have lost a parent you may be able to relate to the pain of the loss of
someone who has always been part of your life - always - and now is no
longer part of the physical reality of life.
At the funeral, those of us in the immediate family
were given a piece of black ribbon which had been ripped - as a
representation of the fact that the fabric of our lives had been torn. And
this is true on so many levels. His body is no longer here. The physical
connection has been torn. Mourning is the process of healing my heart as
well as reweaving the fabric of my life.
Grieving involves suffering, as defined as opening
to that in me which may be disturbing. We suffer and we endure until our
mourning is complete and we have come to a satisfactory resolution
regarding our loss.
When we allow ourselves to suffer we allow ourselves
to feel. We tell the truth about what is, about our loss. And we commit to
face whatever needs to be faced in order to reweave our lives so that the
fabric is whole again. Often we discover that our rewoven self is richer
and more deeply textured, even more beautiful than before.
Suffering and enduring accompanies more in life than
the loss of a loved one. Anytime life does something other than what we
were expecting we experience a loss. If we choose to suffer, if we choose
to face that which is disturbing as a result of our loss, we can indeed
grow ourselves into something even better than before. Even if life
bestows blessings, we may be disturbed for what we expected did not occur.
Embrace the disturbance so you can receive of the gift.
Only if we are willing to suffer with love, and
endure until completion, can we continue to recreate the tapestry of our
lives.
Love your losses as much as you love your successes.
You will only deepen and grow in richness and texture.
QUOTES
"It is yourself that must constantly be
transforming. You cannot bring the same stale self to the world and expect
the world to be new for you."
~Deepak Chopra ~
"The miracle is not to fly in the air, or to
walk on the water, but to walk on the earth."
~ Chinese Proverb ~
REQUEST
I am writing a book on forgiveness. If you would
like to contribute you can do one or both of two things:
- ask me any questions you might have about
forgiveness, what is it, how to do it, why do it....
- send me any story you may have about how
forgiveness, forgiving yourself or another has changed your life, even
in small ways.
PRACTICALLY SPEAKING:
- Notice what is disturbed in you.
- See if you can track your disturbance to a
perceived or actual loss
- Imagine holding your disturbance in your arms.
Embrace your suffering. Breathe into it. Love it.
- Tell yourself the truth about your loss. What is
no longer possible. What doors have been closed.
- Feel your disturbance completely.
- There will be a moment when you notice a calm
that is greater than the disturbance. Breathe into the calm. Allow
yourself to drop into the quiet.
- From this deeper place - look at your loss and
open yourself to discover the gift that is also present.
- Receive of this gift.
- Breathe into this gift and allow it to become
part of the fabric of your life. Accept it into yourself. Allow it to
deepen and grow you.
WONDER QUESTIONS:
- Are you willing to accept your suffering so that
you can grow and deepen?
- Are you willing to feel ALL of your feelings,
whether the experience is disturbing or pleasurable?
- Are you willing to embrace your life as it is -
and transform it with your loving attention?
