POWER TO CHOOSE
Powerful People Make Things Easy (Part 25)
(This article is a continuation of a series
about our personal power to create the life we want)
We each have one true freedom in life and that is
the freedom to choose. No matter what circumstance we find ourselves in,
we can make a choice.
I remember a story that was told to me to
demonstrate this fact of choice. A man went to an ice cream parlor and
asked for a chocolate cone. The attendant informed him that they were
currently out of chocolate. Rather than get annoyed, angry, belligerent,
sad, he chose to order strawberry. When he received the cone his response
was, "Thank you, I will enjoy this strawberry cone."
Even when it seems we cannot have what we want we
can always choose to accept what we have, even to want what is available
to us.
Life has an ease to it when we work through the
options we have and make choices with positive intention rather than
grudging acceptance. The man with the ice cream made a conscious choice to
enjoy an unexpected alternative. He could also have chosen to pursue his
desire for chocolate by visiting another ice cream parlor. The decision is
not nearly as important as the attitude with which he approached the
result. The power was in making his choice with positive intention.
Powerful people live by design. We shape the
experience we have of our life through our choices and our actions. Every
choice, every action has consequences. This is how we create. We choose,
we act, we observe the consequences of our actions, we evaluate those
consequences, make new choices and take new action. How we choose to
respond, what actions we take, will chart the course of our lives.
Life is a series of choices and actions,
Learn how to do this well, enjoy the process as it
unfolds, and you will be a powerful person who makes life easy.

PRACTICALLY SPEAKING:
- Challenge yourself to become aware of the choices
you have day to day, hour to hour, moment to moment. A way to awaken
your awareness could be to reflect at the end of the day - how your
day was created as a result of choices you made.
- Notice if you have habits which make your choices
for you - like staying up late, so that you are rushed in the morning
and often late to work. Or laying your clothes out in the night before
so your morning flows easily.
- When you become aware of feeling helpless, stuck,
or powerless, ask yourself "What are my choices in this moment,
right now?" Listen to what is revealed to you and make a choice
and take an action and notice if you begin to feel more of your power.
