PAUSING
TO REFLECT
Meeting the Challenge of Change, Part 15
Change happens moment by moment. As we are in the
moment that change is occurring we often don't see the change as it
occurs. We therefore perceive that nothing has shifted - as we have little
perspective from which to evaluate our progress.
Getting altitude is key. If you are driving along in
a car - what has your attention is the interior of the car and the road
conditions. Moment to moment things look pretty much the same - other than
the scenery backdrop.
Now imagine yourself in a hot air balloon looking
down on your moving car. From that perspective it is easy to see how far
you have gone and what direction you are headed.
When we don't shift our perspective and offer
ourselves a new viewing point - we tend not to notice that we are indeed
making changes in our lives. If we don't notice our progress it is easy to
fall into discouragement - and give up on our goals.
Life is not about getting anywhere - there is no
'there' to get. Life is a journey, not an event. It serves the change
process to take time regularly to relax and reflect. Shift your point of
view. Get some altitude. Notice where you have been and where you are
relative to your goals. When you notice 'you're not in Kansas anymore',
give yourself a pat on the back.
Then get back in the car and keep on keepin' on.

QUOTES:
"You don't have to do anything. Nowhere to
go, nothing to do. Be peaceful with the way things are now, relax, let
go."
~Unknown ~
"Your vision will become clear only when you
look into your heart."
~Carl Jung~
PRACTICALLY SPEAKING:
- Sometimes it is hard to see the forest for the
trees. Therefore it serves to establish a pattern of reflection
- Allow yourself to pause from the business of life
and take a moment or two to ponder where you are in your journey.
- Notice where you began and compare it to where
you are. Take a moment to give yourself a pat on the back for the
progress you have made.
- Observe where you have fallen "off the
path." What happened that contributed to your derailing? What can
you do to get back on track?
- Look up ahead to where you are headed. What will
it take to get there? Commit to a next action.
- Periodically pause and reflect. Weekly would be
terrific. Do the best you can.
WONDER QUESTIONS:
- Where are you relative to where you have been?
- Are you willing to celebrate your successes to
date?
- What will it take for you to keep on keepin' on?
