THE
POWER OF ASKING
Powerful People Make Things Easy (Part 13)
(This article is a continuation of a series
about our personal power to create the life we want)
How can you get whatever you want?
Hmmm - - -
- - - you could ASK for it!
Oh No - Not That! Many of us believe that asking for
help is a sign of weakness - that we ‘should’ be able to do it all
ourselves - that if we were whole and complete we somehow would not ever
need anyone or anything.
Or we think that if we ask someone - we will be
beholden to them, or perhaps they will judge us less than, or . . . all
limiting beliefs that keep us stuck in non-action.
Powerful people are those people who readily ask for
what they want. Making clear requests and receiving support are part of
the flow of their lives. Acting responsibly often looks like asking for
assistance. Not doing so often undermines our sense well-being and our
productivity.
It’s important to learn the skills of asking:
Be specific: Ask specifically if you want the person
to respond in a way that will support your request. There is a difference
between asking, “Will you please get me something to drink?”, and “Will
you please bring me a glass of ice tea with lemon?”
Ask someone who has the ability to help you: Ask
someone who has the ability and the authority to assist you. Asking my
husband for the ice tea will serve me greater than if I asked my dog to do
it for me.
Be Smart - ask until: Asking intelligently means
asking until. Ask until you get what you need to do what you want.
If you don’t succeed, ask another way. Try a
different approach. Ask another person.
Or ask yourself if you can find a creative way to do
it yourself!
What do you want or need in order to support you in
your life? Do you ask for it? If you don't ask for what you want - how
will you get it?

PRACTICALLY SPEAKING:
You can do the following exercise by writing out the
answers - or you can do it with another person - each of you taking turns
to go through the series of questions.
- What do you want that you haven't asked for?
- Whom don't you ask? Be specific.
- What is the fear?
- What is the worst that could happen?
- What is the best that could happen?
- What is likely to happen?
- Will you ask for it?
- When?

WONDER QUESTIONS:
- Is it okay with you to want what you want?
- If so, do you ask for what you want?
- What do you tell yourself about asking?
- Are you willing to be creative through the power
of making a request?
