DO
MORE OF WHAT WORKS
LIVING
BY DESIGN
(Part 8)
(This article is a continuation in a series
about the creative process.)
As long as I am taking action, I am moving forward.
An object at rest tends to stay at rest. An object in motion tends to stay
in motion. Putting things in motion creates momentum. What the action is,
is not as important as taking action.
Imagine rolling a ball. It tends to keep rolling in
the direction you sent it off in. Now imagine running up to the ball and
with very little force you can change the direction of the ball. Just a
tap and it will begin to take a new course. Yet at the start it took a
much greater effort to get the stationary ball moving.
Action is key. Getting a project in motion, getting
the ball rolling, putting in corrections along the way, fine tuning the
direction of your project, until you create your desired outcome.
Each action produces a result. If the result is what
was desired, great, do more of that. If the result is not the outcome
sought, then try something else.
This is an amazingly simple idea and yet many of us
do the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.
Someone's definition of insanity.
When we acknowledge that we created a result through
our action, we realize we can create a different result through different
action. This is how we claim creativity for our life. What action did I
take? What result did I produce? Does the result move me closer to or
further away from my goal? What is my next action?
Do more of what works. Do less of what doesn't. Try
new things. It's that simple. Stay in motion and keep your eye on the
ball.

PRACTICALLY SPEAKING:
- Ask yourself, "What result do I want to
produce?"
- Notice where you are right now.
- What is one doable action step you can take right
now to take you closer to your goal?
- Take that action.
- Evaluate the results. Did it work? If so, do more
of that.
- If it didn't get you closer, what else can you
do?
- Keep going!

WONDER QUESTIONS:
- What actions can you take to get things moving in
your life?
- Can you take action on a daily basis to keep
things moving in the direction you want to go?
- What is your next action step?
- Are you willing to claim creativity for your
life?
