COURSE CORRECTING
LIVING BY DESIGN
(Part 7)

(This article is a continuation in a series about the creative process.)

Now that you know where you are going, have crafted yourself a goal, and have begun taking action, it's time to notice if you are on or off course. Is what you are doing getting you closer to your goal, or further away from it?

We rarely, if ever, travel to a goal in a straight line. Most of the time we're off course. Your job is to pay attention to the direction you are headed and to put in a correction when you find yourself drifting away from your goal.

When a pilot leaves the airport on the way to a destination, the plane is off course approximately 90% of the time. The plane's navigational equipment is there to monitor the direction the plane is going and to put it back on course, over and over and over again, until the plane finally reaches it's destination. Ninety percent of the time it is off course and it still reaches it's goal!

Part of the process of change and moving forward is to put an internal feedback system in place to warn you when you are not on course, so you can make the adjustments necessary to bring yourself back in line with your goal.

The key is to observe and then correct. We need to monitor the relationship between where we are and where we want to go. Based on our noticing, we can discern a next action---an action we intend will take us closer to our goal.

Learn to observe your actions and the results they produce. Observe whether you are getting closer or further away from your goal. Learn from the feedback you are receiving. Let go of any judgments you have about the results. Modify your actions until you get the desired result. It's that simple.

Remember the plane is off course 90% of the time. Come present, observe, learn from what you observe and put in a correction.

Success is a process, not an event.

QUOTES:

"There is no such thing as failure, there are only results."
~ Anthony Robbins ~

PRACTICALLY SPEAKING:

Practice asking yourself:

  • Where am I?
  • Where do I want to go?
  • What is a next action?

Remind yourself, that you are always successful producing a result.

Learn from the result you produce and take another action.

...and another

...and another....!

WONDER QUESTIONS:

  • What do you want?
  • How could you get it?
  • Where are you currently?
  • What is a next action?
