Above all, he learned from it how to listen, to
listen with a still heart, with a waiting, open soul, without passion,
without desire, without judgments, without opinions.

taught him to listen. (Herman Hesse)

Baby
'O' by Leslie Karen Sann
I have recently returned from visiting my new
grandbaby, Owen, and his folks. The experience was transformative. The
whole weekend was devoted to reweaving the fabric of our family to include
this new one and to awaken to the experience of grandparent.
Being with Owen is all about listening to the
silence for it is in the silence we hear what he needs -- as he is just 10
weeks old he is not much for words. Even his cries, whimpers, coos and
giggles come from the silence.
One thing I discovered during this visit is thought
is not required to be with this new one -- only listening and responding
to what is expressed without words.
In the world of silence, in the world that has no
words, there is much to be shared. And we can learn from this
communication through silence about how to be in a place of deep listening
with one another. We can open up to listen to the silence, the space
between the words, the silence that holds the words of the other.
What if you were to practice to listening to the
silence even though there is sound? What do you imagine you might
discover? Are you willing to experiment and find out for yourself? I
encourage you to give yourself the opportunity to meet this silence in
love, and discover who you will become as a result.
